Why Oil Pipelines Are Often Beneficial

Posted on: 20 February 2015

Oil pipelines sometimes make the news, and for good reason. They are major projects that require a significant amount of manpower and have a striking impact on the areas in which they are built.

Since the oil will be transported anyway, oil pipelines provide a more efficient and safer way to transport oil over long distances. By not using as many trucks, there are fewer trailers on the road, reducing traffic congestion and reducing the risk of car accidents. Pipelines have very few safety-related incidents and are often considered to be the safest means for transporting oil.

The Environmental Impact

Pipelines can be better for the environment because they do not require as much energy to transport the oil as other methods. If the pipelines are constructed in a manner that has a minimal impact on the environment, fewer wildlife habitats will be disrupted, contributing to biodiversity.

Cost Considerations

Also, the pipelines are more cost-effective because the oil does not have to be handled as much. These savings can be passed onto the general population. Not requiring as much energy to transport the crude oil also affects oil prices.

Pipelines allow for very large volumes of oil to be transported across long distances. Millions of liters of oil are transported each day. This helps reduce oil scarcity, which can lower the price of oil. Lower oil spurs consumer spending as they can better afford oil prices.

Constructing pipelines means more jobs. It requires a lot of labor to construct an oil pipeline. One project can easily put thousands of individuals to work overnight. The increase in jobs can also increase tax revenue, which can be put toward more government programs.

Pipelines allow for there to be fewer refineries. The pipelines can transfer crude oil from the original source they are drilled to the location where they can then be refined. The maintenance of refineries is more expensive and has a greater impact on the environment than the maintenance of pipelines.

Improving Life

The oil pipelines deliver a product that is critical to modern life. The pipelines provide safe access to some of the largest oil reserves, which increases energy security. Without energy security, citizens would not be able to operate motor vehicles, fly in planes, heat their homes and businesses or purchase the multitude of products that are made using crude oil. For all of these reasons, pipelines should be carefully considered.
